WebP is the modern image format used across much of the web because it keeps file sizes small. The catch is that many tools still cannot read text out of a .webp file directly. This free WebP-to-text converter solves that: it runs optical character recognition (OCR) on your WebP image and returns the words as plain, editable text β no need to convert to JPG or PNG first.
Everything happens in your browser using the open-source Tesseract OCR engine, with support for roughly 12 languages. There is no software to install and no account to create. As always, clear printed or typed text produces the best results, while handwriting recognition is limited.
How to convert WebP to text
- Upload your
.webpfile using the upload area. - Choose the language that matches the text in the image.
- Click Convert to start the OCR process.
- Review the extracted text in the results box.
- Copy the text or download it as a
.txtfile.
Why use this tool
It is free, needs no sign-up, and adds no watermarks. Your privacy is protected because uploaded WebP files are automatically deleted after processing β nothing is stored once your text is ready. And because WebP, PNG, JPG, and other formats all use the same OCR engine, you get consistent results without first converting your image to another format by hand.
If you happen to have the same image in another format, the PNG to Text and JPG to Text tools work identically. For a one-stop option that accepts almost anything, use the general Image to Text converter.
Tips for best results
WebP can be saved with lossy compression, so grab the highest-quality version available β for web images, that often means the original rather than a thumbnail. Make sure the text is sharp and high-contrast, straighten any skew, and crop out surrounding clutter. For a complete checklist, read our guide on how to improve OCR accuracy.
